Refereeing

Core Responsibilities

Most of the responsibilities for referees is specific to the type of event. That said, there are three main area that all responsibilities and duties will fall into: safety, fairness, and logistics.

Safety

Safety is the primary concern of every race official. Referees work to maintain the safety of riders, spectators, volunteers, passerbys, and themselves. Assistant referees are the eyes and ears of the chief referee and should always report safety issues to the chief referee who is ultimately responsible for race safety.

If a safety issue is immediate, the assistant referee will take action to resolve the problem and then report their actions the the chief referee. This may be things like riders crossing the center line, spectators/cars on a closed course, etc.

Fair Competition

Referees make sure that the event is conducted in a way that is fair to all of the riders. They also make sure that no rider is allowed to take unfair advantage of other riders (generally through a breech of rules).

Event Flow & Logistics

Referees are oversee and manage the flow and logistics of the event. The chief referee will assign responsibilities to assistants referees. The assistants will often times work with volunteers to make sure the individual races flow smoothly. This includes race starts, during the event, and after the event.
